Tails — The Amnesic Incognito Live System — is a Debian-based live operating system that boots from a USB stick and forgets everything on shutdown. Two design decisions define it: all connections are forced through Tor at the firewall level, so a misbehaving application cannot leak around it, and nothing is written to disk unless the user explicitly sets up encrypted persistence.
Why the amnesia matters
Most deanonymization stories end at the endpoint: a seized laptop, a browser profile, a forgotten log file. A system that leaves nothing behind removes that evidence by construction, which is why Tails became the standard recommendation for whistleblowers using SecureDrop and for anyone working from hardware they do not control.
What it does not fix
Tails is slower than a desktop browser, cannot repair compromised hardware, and does nothing about behavior: logging into a personal account from Tails identifies the session as surely as from any other system.
