GetTor
Tor Project service that delivers Tor Browser download links via email or messenger when torproject.org is blocked.
GetTor is the Tor Project’s distribution service for censored regions. When torproject.org is blocked, it delivers genuine Tor Browser download links through channels that are harder to censor: an email autoresponder, messenger bots, and mirrors on large code-hosting platforms.
Why it matters
Blocking the download page is the cheapest censorship move — it stops adoption before any traffic filtering is needed. GetTor routes around it by living on infrastructure, such as major email providers and hosting platforms, that censors are reluctant to block entirely. It pairs naturally with bridges and pluggable transports: GetTor solves getting the software, they solve connecting it.
Common mistake
A censored region is exactly where fake “Tor Browser” installers circulate on portals and file-sharing sites. GetTor’s value is authenticity, so the step that matters is verifying the downloaded package’s signature against the Tor Project’s documented keys. A GetTor link passed along by an unofficial forwarder, or a reposted file, loses that guarantee just as surely as a random download site.
